Man from the South

How I picture Carlos
In the story Man from the South by Road Dahl, Carlos is a foreign man that has a issue with bets. He only likes to bet on one thing, he offers a car or another very expensive object and he asks them to bet their finger. He ends up convincing a young British man to bet that his lighter has to light 10 times in a row without failing and he would give him a Cadillac but if he fails he would cut out a finger. When they were in the process of the bet Carlos wife comes in and tells them about how he has cut a lot of fingers and has lost many many cars. She apologized and the narrator gives her the car keys and he sees she only has three fingers. She explains that she vet with him to take everything away from him so he couldn't bet. He was betting her car.
I think Road Dahl is this author that has a very special way to write his stories, we can see this story as an example because he uses a lot of characterization and imagery. I think the theme of this story is that you dont have to be naive and you have to think it over and over before you bet something or even someone.

Chapter Overview

Over this chapters that reach us to the end of the book i started to realize that there are people in   jona´s society that have to do things that in our society are penalized with jail or even with capital punishment. But these people think that what they are doing is ok because they do not posess the memories. Like for example jona´s father he realeased a baby because he was thiner than he brother, image how terrible this is. But again he is  not aware of the terrible damage he causes.

i made a comic strip based on one of the most important events

Conclution Questtion

One of the things we learn is that in jonas has the capacity to see beyond but the giver has the capacity to hear beyond... this makes me wonder what capacity does baby gabe have?

Pale Blue Eyes

Jonas has pale blue eyes and this is one of the reasons he can see beyond. Earlier in the book i made an inference and i thought if Jonas has pale blue eyes and earlier in the book he mentioned that baby Gabe also has pale blue eyes then he also has the capacity to see beyond.
Pale Blue eyes (Jonas)
In the chapters I passed by in the book recently, baby Gabe cant sleep well and is also taking Jonas parents sleep away. So in dinner Jonas comes up with the idea that maybe they should try making baby Gabe sleep in Jonas room. Jonas is waked up because Gabe couldn't sleep to try to calm  him, he starts to pat him and to touch him. In the book the author mentions that Jonas was not aware or giving the memorie away. But as time passed he keept giving Gabe this little memories to caml him when he couldent sleep I think that this has helped baby Gabe get sleep and it has also helped Jonas parents to rest but this is against Jonas training rules. I believe he has started to make bad desitions.

The Giver´s Times

The giver 8-12 chapters

Thought these 4 chapters of our book, there have been new kinds of surprises to me. The elder apologized to Jonas for skipping his number and he explained that he had nothing to worry about. He explained that he had skipped his number to have more time to explain what will be Jonas assignment. He started explaining that he had the honor to be the new memory receiver and that he would learn from the Memory Giver. And he noticed that this man that was staring at him from the elders sitting spot. The last thing he was told was that his training is going to take a lot of time and that is going to cause him physical pain.                                                                                                                                                          Shortly after the ceremony was over and Jonas rode his bike back to his place with Asher, but he that things had changed in the way Asher felt about him. That night Jonas studied the paper that was handed in to him about his training. He felt very confused by his new set of rules. He was forbidden to dream telling, he could not discuss training with anyone, he may ask a question to a citizen and he has to answer with the truth, he is not permitted to apply for release, and he may lie. The next morning Jonas rode his bike towards the house of the old with Fionna. When he arrived to the place where he was told was his training place, he met his teacher and he gave him his first memory snow, hills, and a sled. He passes memories by touch, Jonas lays down with no top clothes on and the Giver passes his memories and feelings to him.

Chapters 5-8 "The giver"

The Giver 5-8

During chapter five Jonas experiences something that turns him into an adult. This has happened to everyone in his community, his father, his mother, Asher etc. Its called stirrings. People in his community take 1 pill every day to make this feelings go away. If they dont take this pills they start to get sexual desires. This pills seem to act very fast. After that all the family assists to the ceremonies, the first one was the naming ceremony. Fionna recieved his little brother called Bruno. Lily also recieves a new jacket because se became an 8. The ceremony of 12 is finally here, Jonas is number 19 and when it was his turn they skipped to 20. After all numbers were announced and then the Chief elder explained that he had left the best for last. Jonas was announced to be the new memory reciever, the Elder explained to Jonas that this would be a very difficult job because it will involve a lot of phisical pain that he had never experienced before.

READING RESPOSE

During this last chapters i have been observing that Jonas and his family and all of the poeple in his comunity have very little choices to make. In the chapters we read they are asigned their jobs, their kids, their family units. They have very little privacy. They have very estrict rules, thats what we have been noticing.

This weeks chapters were intresting because they really make you think of how would it be to live in a place like this. Could you picture yourself on this world were you are told to do everything and were you have this feeling that you are being observed most of the time. Were your daughter has to have the same hairstile as all the other little girls. This are things that i have been realizing as i have been reading The Giver.

This comunity reminds me of the Hunger Games districts because they also have someone or something that doesent let them take any desitions or have an opinion. Both of this novels have their diferences but have lots of things in common.
